KVTC has and will continue to direct a large share of its products into export markets however the Tanzanian domestic market is becoming increasingly important to KVTC and we have experienced double digit year on year growth over the past few years.

KVTC will be participating with a stand and will showcase some of its products that are available for the local market.

To mark the company’s 25-year anniversary KVTC will launch the KVTC Biomass Challenge in partnership with the Private Forestry Programme

Majority of households in Tanzania depend on firewood and charcoal for their energy needs and with a growing population this is resulting in ever increasing pressure on Tanzania’s forests.

KVTC operates a forest plantation and sawmill in the Ulanga District (Morogoro) and supplies roundlogs to an additional four sawmills in the area. All sawmills are generating significant amounts of unutilized by-products from their milling operations and none of the mills has been able to find commercially viable use for its sawmill residues.

KVTC believes that finding solutions to sawmill residues can offer some solution to Tanzania’s energy needs and assist in reducing deforestation whilst at the same time offer economic opportunities for the company to monetize its waste products. More details below:

At the end of this year (2017) the Kilombero Valley Teak Company (KVTC) has been investing in forestry in the Kilombero Valley for 25 years and to mark this momentous occasion the company will launch an essay contest.

The KVTC essay contest is organized to harness the energy, creativity and initiative of the youth in promoting sustainable development. It also aims to inspire the company to learn from the young minds and to think about how each of us can make a difference.

The competition is open to secondary schools around KVTC associated villages.

DANA (NZ) Ltd is delighted to confirm that it will host a second Africa Forest Industry Investment Conference and Field Trip.

The conference will be held at Skukuza Conference Centre which is inside Kruger National Park on 12 and 13 September 2017, and will be followed by a two day Field Trip with Forest & Wood Processing site visits on 14 and 15 September 2017.

Speaking at the signing ceremony of the Outgrow Supporting Project (OSP) held in Dar es Salaam, the Finland Ambassador to Tanzania Pekka Hukka said the beneficiaries are small holder tree growers and village cooperative outgrowing.

Ambassador Hukka said small and medium enterprises will also benefit, while the government stands to benefit in collecting tax revenues from the plantation business.

He said in 2014 the Tanzania government initiated the Private Forest Program (PFP) in the Southern Highlands area, therefore the Finland government is supporting the programme by helping small scale farmers get on with plantations.

“We work to improve an enabling environment for forest plantation investment and improving the forest value chain with small and medium enterprises in the sawmilling industry,” he explained.

Since 2015, two companies participating in the private forest programme, KVTC and NFC based in Kilolo and Kilombero districts respectively have helped to plant 606 hectares of outgrower plantations owned by 371 small scale farmers.

With such encouraging results, during the last two years the two governments decided to enhance support to small holder tree growers, he said, noting that support to famers totals 1,660,000 EUR with the two governments covering 50 per cent and the two local firms 50 per cent.

He said that the fund will enable the establishment of 2000 hectares of plantation owned by the farmers and entrepreneurs.

Finnish government support to Tanzania in the forest sector stands at euro 30milion and has during the last few years shifted strongly to promote private sector actors in plantation forestry and natural forest management, he elaborated.

Finland was seeking to boost economic growth through the forest sector, which all started with investment from abroad which first sawmilling and then slowly towards products with more added value. “Many of our current large industries including Nokia are a heritage of a strong forest sector,” the envoy added in a statement.

Under the €1.6 million agreement, growers will be provided with improved seedlings, technical advice, fertiliser and extension services.

The Finnish embassy in Tanzania has signed a three-year contract with two local forestry companies to support smallholder tree growers in areas where the firms operate.
